75th Anniversary of First Transatlantic Flight- Digital Print

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

Digital Prints – Easy Remove Vinyl.   To celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the first transatlantic flight from San Francisco to China, the San Francisco International Airport’s Museum wished to acknowledge the challenging feat by displaying  the photo of the China Clipper as a mural 15′ X 15′.   There were a few problems to overcome.  The space selected for the mural was made up of 18 panels divided by aluminum grid lines and the mural would only be up for 30 days.  This worked out perfectly for the project as the mural was fabricated of easy remove digital prints, each panel was 30″ X 60″ – using a lift, easy to install and easy to remove without leaving adhesive residue.  The mural was a success and more historic murals are planned.

Construction Barricade- Digital Printing

Monday, November 1st, 2010

The client contacted Marty Wall from Signs America about covering a construction barricade on the Las Vegas Strip.  A new shopping center was being built and since safety regulations require construction job sites to put up wood barricades why not put up a huge  billboard?  The design was done by Skaggs Advertising out of New York.  The covering is a 13oz digital printed banner that was wrapped around the existing plywood barricade.

UPDATE:  NEW SIGNS REQUIRED FOR COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS AND MULTI-UNIT RESIDENCES

San Francisco Ordinance Prohibits Smoking in Enclosed Areas

Effective January 10, 2010, the San Francisco Health Code was amended to prohibit smoking in certain enclosed areas, certain unenclosed areas and sports stadiums.  The ordinance will have an impact on all commercial buildings and multi-unit residences in San Francisco.
Prohibited smoking areas include:

*  Business establishments and bars regardless of whether owner-operated
*  Unenclosed dining areas of restaurants
*  Service waiting areas
*  Areas outside entrances, exits and operable windows and vents of all buildings except at the curb of the  nearest street, sidewalk or alley

Sign Posting:

The signs should be posted at every entrance to the building.  The text should read:  ”Smoking only at the curb or at least 15 feet (or 25 feet to earn a point towards LEED certification) from exits, entrances and operable windows”.  Overall size of the sign is approximately 4″ X 9″.  Signs America has the regulations and can design, fabricate and install these signs for you.

Museum at San Francisco Airport

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

The Museum at San Francisco Airport   was looking for a way to showcase their collection of fine Japnanese ceramics.  After conducting a site visit, Signs America suggested that a mural be designed to be displayed on the wall in the International Terminal.  In order for the mural to fit the selected space, it was designed in 18 panels, each 2′ X 3′.  The panels are digitally printed on easy remove vinyl.  At the end of the show, the vinyl panels will be easy to remove and will not leave behind adhesive residue.  This is a good example of art in open spaces.

Digital Printed Banners- Union Bank

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Back when Union Bank was called Union Bank of California, 2006 marked the 100th Anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake.  Union Bank was one of a handful of buildings that were left standing after that devastating disaster and for that the building on California Street held a remembrance of sorts to honor that time in our history.  Signs America was charged with the signage for this event and 30′ banners were printed and erected between the large columns in the front of the building.

There were a lot of challenges in this job.  One of them being that anything built prior to 1970 something is considered historical in the eyes of  the San Francisco Preservation Department so to acquire a permit required special permits including a structural engineer to draw up special hardware to hold these heavy banners, after all, the Preservation Department said we can put the banners up as long as we don’t drill any holes into the columns.

So the finished design was rings of steel that would be put on the columns like a collar.  The steel collars were made over sized so that we can put sheets of rubber between the steel and the column to prevent slipping as well as damage to the column.  Then a heavy gage wire was connected from collar to collar at the top and the bottom so that the banners can be turn buckled to the wire to keep them taught.

Signs America performed this work 3 times for 3 different events for Union Bank.

Windmaster Signs

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Windmasters (made by MDI Worldwide) are a curb sign that have rollers on a tough plastic base that can be filled with sand or water.  With the snap frame to hold the sign in place these signs are great to use for events, parking garages, retail stores, restaurants, and valet parking.

The Windmaster holds two sign blanks and both of those can be double-sided so one sign can be four different signs through out the day.  For example, a parking garage that has a early bird special can have one panel with the special rate and on the back it could have a design of “Drive Safely” for people who are exiting the parking ramp.  Then on the back side of the the “Early Bird” side, you can have the normal hourly rate after the Early Bird Special is finished and on the back of the “Drive Safely” side you can have “Event Parking” or “Do Not Enter.”

The design of the Windmaster is very clean and professional.  It has a high end look.  The sign itself is extremely durable lasting many trips to the curb.  Curb signage can be very effective since the sign is at eye level when you are sitting in a car or walking down the sidewalk.  It can grab attention that a large sign high up in the air might not be able to  attract when you are close to the location.
